Product Description
With dramatically improved navigation, cleaning coverage, vacuum pickup, and particle filtration, the Roomba 500 series vacuuming robot picks up amazing amounts of dirt and debris with the simple touch of a button. The powerful unit features innovative spinning side brushes that grab dirt and dust from corners and along wall edges, as well as two high-speed, counter-rotating brushes that pick up pet hair, cat litter, food crumbs, and other debris from floors. The vacuum sucks up the debris and deposits it into a large, easy-to-empty bagless dustbin, and its improved fine-filtration system traps dust, pollen, and other allergens inside the unit, reducing infiltration into the living environment. For added convenience, the vacuum's cleaning head automatically adjusts to transition from wood, tile, and linoleum to carpets and rugs, while improved anti-tangle technology ensures it won't get stuck on cords and rug fringe. If the unit begins to pick up a cord or carpet tassel, it will automatically reverse the direction of its brushes to extract the item. A gentle-touch bumper system senses obstacles so the vacuum automatically slows its approach, gently touches the obstacle, then redirects to continue cleaning under or around the object. Because it cleans under beds, couches, and other hard-to-reach areas, it actually vacuums more of the floor than a standard upright. The vacuum also senses dirtier areas and spends more time cleaning them, and it uses built-in cliff sensors to avoid stairs and other drop-offs. In addition, invisible barriers can be set using the unit's Virtual Wall Lighthouse system. To mark off-limit areas, simply place a Virtual Wall at a doorway or other opening and adjust the infrared beam setting to the distance of the opening. The unit automatically detects the beam and will not cross it.

3 out of 5 stars irobot   June 11, 2010

At first I was very excited. Turned it on and it started talking to me, we started developing a relationship, but soon i started to realize she was more of a bimbo who looked good, but didn't do much.

I called customer service many times and finally they replaced the bushings, which I later found out was a HUGE problem with these things. That helped a little. But after a while she started deteriorating. Stoped picking up my dogs hairs. After a while I got fed up and sold it.

However, customer service at irobot is awsome, helped me all the way thru. I guess if i really wanted I could have sent them the whole thing and they would have gave me a new one. I might just have had a defective item. The thing worked well for a few weeks, but then I got bored of her! Now to look for something younger and better :-)

2 out of 5 stars Spins around   June 2, 2010

I was very happy with my Roomba for the first 11 months. Then I bought a replacement battery, because the old one didn't last long enough. After that the problems started, even though I can hardly connect the problems with the battery replacement. The Roomba would spinn around and then stops after making the error sound (9 times). I have read that this indicates a problem with the sensors, but there is no relieve for me. By the time I figured out the problem, the warranty ran out. Now I am willing to place the roomba on the market for anybody to buy it from me in this condition. And I will wait for a quality product to hit the market.

5 out of 5 stars 5 to 1 for the 550   April 20, 2010

I bought a Roomba back in January (well December 26, but they didn't deliver until January).

Initially, it worked great. Oh sure, the thing would be stopped somewhere with an error light flashing occasionally wanting the brushes cleaned or the bin emptied. Other than that, I thought I had a good thing.

Then, last week it started clunking. It would come off the charging stand and run for a few seconds, then almost stall, and then slowly amble away, clunking every second.

They tell me the red gearbox is shot.

It will take a proper repair to make this thing work and to keep a customer.

5 out of 5 stars Love it! Getting another.   April 4, 2010

I bought the Roomba to clean the upstairs of our townhouse. I hate vacuuming, and it was a chore to lug the vacuum up and down the stairs. The upstairs has never been cleaner. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms on that level, and it is just fun to see Roomba make its way through all the rooms. It does a very good job navigating the layout, and I do occasionally use the lighthouses to make sure that it adequately cleans the bedrooms or hallway before scooting out an open door into another area before it has spent enough time in one.

I'm getting another to clean the downstairs, which is a fairly open area consisting of kitchen, dining room, living room and a half bath.

It works quite well on pet hair. We have three cats, and I am amazed at how much pet hair it picks up per session; I run it 3-4 times per week.

Maintenance is easy. I just clean the bin, filters, and rollers after each use. It takes a minimal amount of time.

Roomba is definitely a hit. I also find myself talking to it, as some others have noted. Haven't name it yet, though, it's still Roomba.

5 out of 5 stars Best purchase ever!!   March 30, 2010

I was skeptical when I first purchased the Roomba, but not anymore. I have one dog who sheds everywhere and a long haired cat. We used to have hair and dust on the furniture constantly even an hour after cleaning and dusting. Now even when the sun is shining on the floors I can't see any. My wife has named it and it gets about the same attention as the kids do :-). If you maintain it I think it is a great product but I can see where it could fail easily without the proper maint. I would recommend this to anyone, and have.
