1 out of 5 stars Had problems with both my Scoobas from the get-go   January 1, 2009
    Cory Jubitz (Bend, OR, USA)
I am having problems with the second Scooba I purchased after only five uses. I returned the first one to the store where I purchased it because the brush broke after a month. I have had to troubleshoot problems (running out of solution, changing the tank mid-clean, the brush not clicking into place, to name a few) wayyyy too often to recommend this product. Oh, and it does NOT work on tiled floors; it will not clean the grout at all, just move the dirt around. Even those reviewers who rated the Scooba favorably have comments about the Scooba not working properly. They're lucky that their Scoobas still function at all.

Don't buy this product unless you enjoy troubleshooting problems and/or spending $300 for a machine that will work a handful of times before breaking.

2 out of 5 stars Customer Service a Waste of Time   December 29, 2008
Bruce W. Mccaskey (Seattle, WA USA)
I recently purchased a new Scooba "Model 330" on a close-out of a national store chain - no return and no refund. When I got it home and opened the box I found the unit inside was marked as a Model 5800. Maybe that's the same thing, but I wasn't pleased to see the switch in model information between box and unit. Regardless, I charged it per instructions and put it into use.

The first problem it had was that was just a fraction of an inch too tall to pass under the edges of my kitchen cabinets, so it got stuck each time it ran into the toe "kick space" of the cabinets and also when passing under the door of my dishwasher. It also manages to get stuck when it passes over the floor heating vents.

I came up with ways to partially deal with those issues, but was very unhappy when I found how short of a time the battery lasted. The unit ran 25 minutes on its first full charge, and in subsequent use occasionally worked up to running 33 to 35 minutes, though after 10 uses it still rarely made it to 30 minutes before shutting down.

After the first few uses I called iRobot customer service seeking resolution for the short battery operating period and was told that lasting less than 30 minutes was acceptable. when I pointed out that it ran out of power before using even half of the cleaning solution in its tank it was suggested that I should just fill the cleaning tank less than half-full to start. Odd that isn't clearly stated in the user manual where it talks about it using the tank and then going into a drying cycle when the tank empties. I was very irritated and frustrated by the time I got off the phone with them and my issue wasn't resolved.

I eventually grew tired of the situation and purchased a new battery for the unit rather than waste my time talking with iRobot again. The unit now uses the entire tank's contents on a regular basis. Of course the new battery wasn't cheap and I received no compensation.

I am very disappointed with iRobot's version of customer service, I didn't buy this Scooba with the notion of having to beg or argue with them in order to get satisfaction. I would have returned it if I could, but as mentioned at the start it was purchased from a closing store on a no-return basis.

The Scooba (with new battery) does an OK job of cleaning, but has to be monitored constantly to free it when it gets stuck. I've managed to keep it from going under the cabinet edges but it still gets hung up on the floor heating vents every few minutes.

I've improved the situation by pulling the metal vents out of the floor when I run the Scooba so that cliff sensors can aid it in avoiding the "holes" but that doesn't work 100% of the time. On the other hand, I consider it something of a home safety issue to have open holes in the floor while the Scooba is running so I don't consider this to be a good fix. I'm going to try other solutions, perhaps making thin plywood covers to go over the vents while the Scooba is running.

If you're considering purchasing a Scooba and plan to use it in your kitchen you should be aware of the potential for it to get hung up and stuck under the cabinets and on floor heating vents. At the very least I suggest you purchase your iRobot product from a store that will permit you to return the unit if you're not satisfied rather than leaving you dependent on iRobot customer service for solutions.

On a related topic, just a few days prior to purchasing the Scooba I bought a Roomba 550 from a different store. It worked fine for a few uses but within less than a dozen cleaning cycles it came up "lame" in one wheel. When activated it would only turn in circles and cleaning the "cliff sensors" didn't help. I finally tried turning the offending wheel by hand with the power off and found it was almost impossible to move while the other wheel turned readily. I removed the wheel assembly but could find no external issues.

Perhaps iRobot might have responded to a request to fix this unit since I'd owned it less than two months, but based on their "customer service" response to my Scooba issue I didn't waste time contacting them. I just wanted resolution but the thought of having to deal with iRobot again had me in a foul mood. Instead I went back to the store where I purchased it and they permitted me to return it without issue and even apologized for the product not providing satisfaction.

5 out of 5 stars love my little robot   December 27, 2008

This little robot amazed me. It gets my floors very clean every time, and doesn't leave streaks. You only need to add a small amount of liquid cleaner or vinegar to the scooba and fill it with warm water. Then go read a book while it washes your floor. After its done, maintaining it is easy. Empty the dirty water, rinse the little filter and brushes and return it to charge for the next time. There are a few downsides. It can get stuck under low cabinet lips (i just stick a broom handle under mine to keep it out). I find it is really only able to clean one room at a time before needing charging. The scooba came with a small crack in the tank, but irobot replaced it within a few days, their customer service department is great. I've dealt with them before concerning a roomba that I own, and they are very responsive and I've never been disappointed. This is one luxury I would not want to live without!

1 out of 5 stars Please don't waste your money like I did.   December 13, 2008

I love the little Scooba floor mopper. It's fun to watch, and it really gets the floor clean. However, it has a major flaw--one that the manufacturers know about, and it comes with instructions about how to live with that flaw. IT HAS A PROBLEM PUTTING DOWN ANY WATER/CLEANER. When I took my Scooba out of the box, it wouldn't put down water, so I went through the troubleshooting guide, and sure enough, there was a solution. It said that sometimes the pumps get stuck and need to be primed...they even send along a syringe to help you with the problem. After working with it for a while I finally got it to put down water. All went well for a couple of months. Then it stopped putting down water again. No amount of coaxing or priming would produce any water. So I called the company for help. The technician told me that the problem couldn't be fixed, and it was just best to toss the Scooba in the trash. I don't know about anyone else, but I think that's too much money to spend on a product that has a known, unfixable flaw!

    5 out of 5 stars I love you Scooba!   December 12, 2008

Sigh... I miss my Scooba so much!
I got my Scooba shortly after my daughter started crawling. We live in a small apartment with hard floors and the constant cleaning and anxiety about cleaning was driving me nuts!
As you might guess, with a new baby we didn't have a lot of money so I did not take the $300 for this lightly. I also bought a service plan, since I have worked with small appliances before and planned to use this guy a lot!
Well! To the point of things, I love Scooba! He would mop the whole floor while I did more important stuff. Of course you have to refill him and clean out the filters but it's no more of a hassle than cleaning out a mop. And I found it cleaned the floor much better! Especially in a small place like an apartment, where it's difficult to wield a big mop and bucket. And the baby wasn't even scared of it. Well, unless it started coming straight at her.
Unfortunately after 6 months the pump failed, which is where the service plan came in. I called customer service and they were very quick in diagnosing the problem and offering to fix it. This is when I found out that I was sold a service plan in error, since the Scooba I bought was refurbished. I didn't even have an opportunity to get upset about this because Amazon apologized and gave me a full refund on both the service plan and the Scooba! I was amazed at this level of customer service. They even paid to ship the Scooba back to them.
I will definitely be getting another Scooba soon! We bought a Hoover H3044 FloorMate SpinScrub Wide-Path Hard-Floor Cleaner recently, thinking it would be as good. Just so you know, it's NOT. It's heavy and hard to use and barely does as good a job as the Scooba. Thrice the effort for twice the price. Boo.
