We live in a loft space with concrete floors, two small dogs, and windows open all the time (a benefit of being on the 6th floor). We purchased our scooba over two years ago with much anticipation, and (honestly) realistic expectations.
We've had issues with it not laying down it's "snail trail" (evidence it's washing) almost from the beginning. There's a problem with the water pump -- if you let the unit sit more than a week or so unused, the intake clogs (probably with the cleaner) and you have to soak the little nub before it's gonna work again. (We use a straw stuck on it and put a little water in the straw.) Our unit lately seems to be losing some vacuum power as well, as it's picking up less water than it used to (leaving a heavier "snail trail"). We think overall it's on it's last leg.
We had more issues with the battery in the beginning; eventually they replaced the battery, and installed some software update and it works better, but it doesn't run for longer than about 40 minutes. Go lightly on the cleaner, as well; if it's foaming, lighten up on it -- all that happens in the intake clogs more readily and solidly.
A few more quick comments so this doesn't get painfully long. Sure, in theory the random pattern gets everywhere, but notice their example is an empty area. Most people have furniture. In reality, you can have areas where it runs the same pattern over and over, cleaning the same spots again and again. We have old concrete floors and it doesn't like uneven-ness; it will get stuck. If you have a heavy-dirt environment (and I think we count as that) you will need to run the machine almost daily to keep it really clean.
Having said all that, I would gladly consider another scooba in a few years if they've made some improvements in battery, and possibly intelligence enough to "learn" the layout of your place. I have a roomba and have nothing but praise -- but sweeping is a less complicated task for machinery than mopping.
Bottom line: if your floor is level and you only have to light-mop occasionally to keep clean, the scooba is right up your alley.

Im going to start by saying i bought my scooba second hand, with no idea what its been treated like by its previous owner. I realize most posters here will have bought theirs new, but i wanted to give a quick review regarding the durability.
I bought the scooba at an estate sale-it was not looking v.pretty at the time and it had not been tested. the metal cover that sits over the lids for the clean and dirty water was corroded-the unit was dirty and i had no prior experience with the roomba's. It did come with all the pieces, charger etc. so i decided to take a chance on it..pretty self explanatory, plug in, wait till charged and fill with cleaner (as i had no clorox scooba cleaner i used vinegar). pushed the power button and she purred to life. I really was so pleased that it even powered on in the first place i decided to give her a test drive and let her rip. to my delight the scooba began crawling the kitchen floor. i hurried around and moved everything out of the way that might be an issue..here is my advice so far-
1.put your chairs on the table, or in another room, remove the trashcan, rugs and give a light sweep to remove any big crumbs like cereal, etc. The scooba will manouver its way around the chairs and that, but it seems to spend lots of time figuring them out and each time it passes that area and bumps a chair leg it likes to figure them out again.
2. the vinegar water combo works fabulously and is obviously much easier on your budget-if you cant stand the smell, set the scooba to run while you are out or at bedtime, if it wont disturb you.
3. The scooba does leave water behind, another reason to run it while you are in bed or out of the house. Mine took about 30 minutes to be completely dry, the scooba does go over the same spot several times, leaving that much more water each time. Im not saying puddles here, but similar to a traditional mop. (maybe using the clorox solution results in a quicker drying time?)
4. I would personally say this would be worth it only if you have more than a kitchen to clean. My house is regrettably carpet with the exception of kitchen and bathrooms, so i think a few hundred dollars isnt worth it for just these rooms.
While i admittedly have not had the scooba for long yet, i wanted to comment that the scooba seems to take a lickin and keep on tickin. I am pleased that i could go online and immediatly find a online manual, refills of cleaner and replacement parts.

I purchased my scooba last year. In the past year I have not been able to use my scooba at least half of the time. I have had to update software when the battery died, I've called customer support repeatedly and get "push this button, push that button". Sometimes it works, sometimes I have to let it sit and keep coming back to try again. Now the battery is dead, again. Customer support says "sorry, you're out of warranty. You have to buy a new battery." Save your money. This product is bad, but customer support is even worse.

Before you even hear my story, consider this: there are tons of negative reviews and there are tons of refurbished models--that should be enough proof the product is a failure.
In my case, the thing has always had trouble completing the cycle without going to the death march and stopping. The company sent us a new battery and changed the instructions to let it run out or not... now the thing just can't go for more than 10 minutes without quitting. It cleans alright--but consider it lays down the liquid during the first part--then comes through to pick it up. The last few times I've tried using this, I've had to clean up its mess because it quits.
The [...] was bad enough--but at this point I feel the investment into their dang cleaning product--and even the D-cell batteries into the virtual wall just seems like throwing good money after bad. If you want to constantly tinker with this... and end up cleaning by hand when it fails... then go for it. Just realize the product is not reliable AT ALL!

I purchased the newest version of the Scooba and the newest version of the Roomba.
I was kind of skeptical when I saw the Scooba demonstrated on TV,so I thought I would do a test myself.
I have 4 dogs,who traipse through the kitchen many times daily,bringing with them leaves,sand,shedded hair...you name it.So...I swept the floor first.I then ran the new Roomba over the same area,kitchen floor.I let it run for about 15 minutes,turned it off,and inspected the brushes and dirt-catching chamber.I was amazed,and mortified...because all this time I thought I was doing a good job of sweeping.My old Roomba is still running well..I use it upstairs exclusively.
The amount of hair and dirt the new Roomba collected was astounding!!! The only drawback to the machine is that it may get stuck under the lower kitchen cabinets,which it did,but it told me it was stuck,and I moved it. Because the lower cabinets are difficult to sweep even with a conventional broom,I forgave the robot.So now,when I want to use the Roomba,I just sweep under the cabinets.Which takes about 1 minute.No huge time sacrifice on my part.
So,after the Roomba swept the floor,I mopped the floor using a conventional mop, and mop bucket.I used a good floor cleaner(vinyl floor).It looked pretty good after I was finished,and then after it was dry,I put the Scooba to work.
First,it made a thorough sweep of the floor to sweep up any light dirt I may have missed,and that the mop might have missed.Then,it started its scrubbing cycle,and saturated the entire floor(after "learning"the layout of the floor) with the cleaning solution(you can also use white vinegar if you wish).I just let it do its thing and after about 45 minutes,it stopped and let me know the tanks had to be changed.Here came the moment of truth:I turned it over and emptied the dirty water into the mop bucket.It was as black as ink.Again,I was horrified.It is difficult to keep a house clean with 4 dogs,2 cats and 4 parrots,but I always thought I was doing a good job.Was I ever wrong,and was I ever surprised to see what the Scooba had accomplished.
I am completely satisfied with the Scooba,and some of my friends will be getting them for Christmas!!I have told the absolute truth here:I am mad for the Scooba.Using any kind of mop is just not good enough any more.I have to use my little,faithful Scooba.Give it a try.
